Social support is a reciprocal process in relation to any information or support provided to people, implying a positive effect on the receiver. This study aimed to characterize the social support among child companions hospitalized in hematopediatric unit and think about the multiprofessional’s team possibilities of encourage social support among companions. This is a qualitative and descriptive study in which 20 caregivers of children hospitalized with cancer were interviewed. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Four categories of analysis resulted: types of social support, made support effects, advantages and constraints aspects of support. The data showed that the exchange of support was an important coping tool, easing suffering during hospitalization and treatment of the child.
