Traffic accidents (TA) and its hospitalization’s consequences are situations potentially stressful. Stressful situations demand from the victims coping strategies. This study aim to verify the correlation between stress and coping strategies in hospitalized TA victims. The sample consisted of 10 inpatients. To evaluate the patients, we used the Coping Strategies Inventory and the Lipp’s Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults. Most of the participants (80%) presented relevant levels of stress divided by 50% in the resistance phase, 10% in near exhaustion phase and 20% in the exhaustion phase. A significant positive correlation was found between stress and escape / avoidance coping strategy (rho = 0.835).  We conclude that the health team should assist the patients in developing more functional coping strategies.
