Abstract

SILVA, Rosenir Maria da; MOTTA E SILVA, Maria Thereza  and  FELIX, Jullyane Renata Lopes. The mourning of health professionals in pediatric oncology in a phenomenological perspective. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2019, vol.17, n.1, pp. 81-101. ISSN 2175-3547.

In the 20th century, death in the hospital context acquired the connotation of failure, assuming a culture of denial that endures to current days. The role of healthcare professionals in the Pediatric Oncology is permeate by the process of death and dying. This study aims to understand the experiences of grief, experienced by healthcare professionals facing the losses of their patients. This is a qualitative, descriptive study and a phenomenological type, following the model of Giorgi (1985). It was developed at the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, in Pernambuco, Brazil. From the analysis of the language of the professionals, the following thematic categories arose: bonds and emotional involvement, feelings of helplessness in the face of suffering, impact on mental health and coping resources. Thus, while this work extends the understanding about deep experience of grief, it also supports healthcare professionals in dealing with the intense workday.
