The generalization of Gilberto Freyre's concept of the patriarchal family is questioned. Even considering such a concept a theoretical construct to explain Brazilian familiar behavior, recent researches indicate that this model cannot be generalized to different moments of Brazilian history and to families of different social segments and suggest the necessity of careful research before accepting certain models of the historic Brazilian family.
