Abstract

COSTA, Marcelo Fernandes da; OLIVEIRA, André Gustavo Fernandes; BERGAMASCO, Niélsy Helena Puglia  and  VENTURA, Dora Fix. Psychophysical and electrophysiological visual function measurements in infants: a review. Psicol. USP [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.4, pp. 15-33. ISSN 1678-5177.

Many functions are present in the visual system at the birth. The time required for maturation varies among these functions. In this paper, we first show how visual psychophysics and electrophysiology have been collaborating to the measurement and to the study of the development of three visual functions: visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and color vision. In a second part, we discuss how the measurements and the development of these functions could be impaired in pathologies that affect the visual system as prematurity and cerebral palsy.

Keywords : Psychophysics; Electrophysiology; Visual acuity; Contrast sensitivity; Color discrimination.
