TEIXEIRA, Ilka Nicéia D’Aquino Oliveira  y  NERI, Anita Liberalesso. Envelhecimento bem-sucedido: uma meta no curso da vidaSuccessful aging: a goal in the course of life. Psicol. USP [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.1, pp. 81-94. ISSN 1678-5177.

There is no consensual definition of successful aging. The adjectives healthy, active, robust, and successful aging are used, without discrimination, to tentatively explain a way of aging in a positive manner. The aim of this article is to discuss the meaning of successful aging by stressing that the subjectivity of the concept is related both to individuality and social-cultural differences. Longevity should not be the only component to assess successful aging. Aging well encompasses multiple factors, including psychological, biological, and social ones. The conclusion is that subjective well-being is the most important component to evaluate “success”. Successful aging is similar to an organizational principle, which can be achieved by setting realistic personal goals in the course of life.

Palabras clave : Aging; Longevity; Quality of life; Health of the elderly.
