This article aims at making a critical review of the correlation between vocational guidance practices and the evolution of the work relationships in the capitalist society, reflecting about its consequences in the contemporary Brazilian vocational guidance. First of all, it makes brief comments about the concept of work along the human history. Then, the article makes some considerations about the evolution of capitalism and the industrial society with emphasis in the characteristics of the work world in the contemporary society. Finally, it discusses the role of vocational counselors in this new social and economic world order.
