Resumen

Maturity for professional choice: comparing high school students. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2003, vol.4, n.1-2, pp. 97-103. ISSN 1984-7270.

This research aims at comparing the maturity level of high school students for professional choice, according to gender and high school grades. The Maturity Scale for Professional Choice (MSPC - “Escala de Maturidade para a Escolha Profissional - EMEP”) was applied to 506 high school students from a private high school in São Paulo city. The MSPC is a multi-factorial scale made of five sub-scales: Determination, Responsibility, Independence, Self-Knowledge and Educational and Professional Reality Knowledge. Results showed no significant difference in the total maturity, according to the gender. However, the girls proved to be more responsible and independent than the boys, while the boys showed to possess a larger knowledge of the professional reality. It was also seen that the level of maturity for the professional choice increases progressively from the 1st to the 3rd grade. These results may be used as subsidies for the development of projects in the vocational guidance area, seeking to stimulate maturity growth in the professional choice.
