Abstract

TEIXEIRA, Marco Antônio Pereira  and  GOMES, William Barbosa. Finishing college... what now?: Reflections and expectancies of undergraduates. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2004, vol.5, n.1, pp. 47-62. ISSN 1984-7270.

This study explored the experience of transition from university to the labor market of undergraduates. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with students from Pharmacy and Dentistry (aged 21 to 26 years). The method of analysis followed the phenomenological tradition. Overall, the students’ expectations about their professional future were optimistic. The most outstanding factors embasing professional plans were their personal beliefs about their qualification and professional capacity. This sense of competency was the result of the students’ involvement with their course activities, especially the practical and optional ones. The results indicated that the participants seem not to be prepared for the transition period. It is suggested that career guidance programs be offered to university students.
