This paper aims to investigate which factors, related both to the educational and to the professional trajectories of the students form the public high schools, were decisive to the effectuation of their professional choices or not. In order to accomplish that, ten students from two public schools, which finished high school in 1997, were interviewed. The interviews were submitted to a Content Analysis. The conclusions of this research indicate that the social-economical factors represent the main barrier to the concretization of the professional choices of the subjects. Hence, it is necessary to consider the term “professional choice” as a relative concept, for the young people pertaining to the less favored classes of the capitalist society. They are very limited in their choices because of their social condition, which, very often, forces them to choose paths in which the necessity overcomes the will.
