Abstract

This study investigated the importance of higher education in high school students’ perceptions. Participants were 659 high school students (54,8% girls and 45,2% boys) from public (50,1%) and private (49,9%) schools in Porto Alegre (RS), with ages between 15 and 23 years (M=16,8; DP=0,85). Results show that 86,2 % of the students intend to tace the university entry exams when they finnish high school. There were found no differences between boys and girls, but type of school (public and private) and parental education (elementary, secundary and higher) were significant observed aspects. Results support higher education as one of the few options to students concluding high school.
