RIBEIRO, Marcelo Afonso. The family professional project as an important reason for university abandon: a preliminary study. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2005, vol.6, n.2, pp. 55-70. ISSN 1984-7270.

This article presents the report of a research that studied the hypothesis that each student has a personal and professional project designed for them by their family, which can include studies at a university or not; it also tests if the explaining of the social and historical aspects of that project would help to understand the reasons for university abandon. The sample consisted of 155 students that had abandoned the Psychology Course they attended at a private university in São Paulo, during the period from 2000 to 2004. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire and a semi-structered interview including categories defined, a priori, that explained the reasons for abandoning studies. Those categories included financial, vocational, educational and commitment difficulties. The findings pointed out that the financial difficulty appeared as an objective and acceptable explanation by the family (53,54%). On the other hand, explanation of the construction of the family professional project helped understand how the subjects’ habitus and the crisis in university pattern contributed significantly to explain the subjects’ university career and university abandon.
