MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira  and  GOMES, William Barbosa. Vocational personalities, generativity and career in adult life. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2005, vol.6, n.2, pp. 71-79. ISSN 1984-7270.

Erikson described generativity as the concern with the development of human communities and the welfare of next generations. In our culture, professional activity is considered to be the main individual contribution to society. This research investigated the relations between generativity and occupational career. This relationship was examined across groups defined according to type of vocational interest. The subjects were 733 workers (415 men and 318 women) with ages ranging from 25 to 65 years and with a minimum of 5 years of occupational career. The subjects answered measure instruments of vocational interests, generativity, career commitment and career entrenchment. Generativity showed positive correlation with career commitment and negative correlation with career entrenchment. Those correlation were different depending on the type of Vocational interest. The results suggested that personality variables may mediate the relationship between generativity and career.
