Abstract

RIBEIRO, Marcelo Afonso  and  UVALDO, Maria da Conceição Coropos. Frank Parson’s biography: a vocational and career guidance pioneer. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2007, vol.8, n.1, pp. 19-31. ISSN 1984-7270.

Frank Parsons is considered the father of vocational and career guidance by international literature, due to his pioneering work. He systematized theoretically and technically the first works in the area carried out in Boston, USA. In spite of this, there is, in the Brazilian literature, no articles or books about him, nor his writings have been translated into Portuguese, so creating a gap for the researchers in career counseling in Brazil. This article intends to rescue the history of one the most important names in professional guidance and demythicize some ideas about him. The article presents and comments on Frank Parson’s life career and his main ideas and methods. These are discribed in the book “Choosing a Vocation” published in 1909, and still unpublished in Brazil. It also tries to point out his contributions for the present and future of career counseling.
