Abstract

TEIXEIRA, Maria Odília. The socio-cognitive approach in vocational counseling: a reflection about the evolution of the concepts and the guidance practices. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp. 9-16. ISSN 1984-7270.

Throughout the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the history of Vocational Psychology has been connected to the changes in concepts of work and education as well as to the appearance of psychological paradigms, that have been modifying the subject and the purpose of psychological intervention in vocational guidance. Currently, the socio-cognitive approach is representative of one practice which focuses on the person, who has the ability to decide about their life path and well-being. The person is view relatively to the contexts where is inserted, and where the role of learning is decisive to grow but also to change. The work and the study are considered as life tasks, which each person can manage and control. This perspective integrates the previous approaches, whether differential or developmental, but also it is innovative because it locates the vocational problems as self-regulation processes, throughout the life.
