BARDAGI, Marucia Patta  e  HUTZ, Cláudio Simon. Perceived parental support in the context of career choice and university dropout. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp. 31-44. ISSN 1984-7270.

Although family support is essential for adolescents’ and young adults’ career development, there are few studies investigating family participation in undergraduates’ career dropout. This study investigated the support for career choice and dropout perceived by eight university students, three women and five men, between 20 and 25 years, that had abandoned the undergraduation courses at different moments. Through interviews, little family communication was seen to occur about career issues, in the period of choice and in the period of dropout. Also, fear to disappoint family expectations generated anxiety in students as well as caused them to postpone dropout. These results point out the importance of parental participation in the process of career choice and the need for more family support during undergraduation.
