Abstract

BEZERRA, Delma Rosa dos Santos  and  SOARES-SILVA, Ana Paula. Education of caregivers: identity negotiation when attending high school. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp. 97-112. ISSN 1984-7270.

The inclusion of daycare centers in the Brazilian educational system has caused many significant changes in the area of Children’s Education. One of these changes refers to Law 9394/96 that requires that caregivers’ education should include at least high school. Since 1996, some municipal educational systems have created courses for caregivers. Considering that caregivers’ education is crucial for the caregiver’s professional identity, this study tried to understand the identity negotiations and the meanings of being an educator built by four professionals who were going across their formation process. Based on the Narrative and the Network of Meanings (SigNet) perspectives, the study showed that the construction of professional identity was achieved by a process of: observing/imitating colleagues; negotiation among social/professional/personal identities and by the integration of practical knowledge and course information. Caregivers have attributed another meaning to their roles by denying/stating new possibilities for their professional and personal lives.

Keywords : Identity; Daycare center; Caregivers education.
