SOBRAL, Joana Mafalda; GONCALVES, Carlos Manuel  and  COIMBRA, Joaquim Luís. The influence of parental career on their adolescent children’s vocational development. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.1, pp. 11-22. ISSN 1984-7270.

This investigation studies the impact of parental job situation (employed or unemployed) on the vocational courses of their children. The sample is composed of 327 adolescents from both school and high school from public institutions in Porto-Portugal. They answered an Exploration and Commitment Career Scale (ECCS). Results indicate that the children of employed parents tend to invest more on their vocational development than the children of unemployed parents. Besides that, the latter also tend to present more vocational diffusion and a tendency to exclude career options than the children of employed parents. From the results implications are drawn for psychological vocational intervention and directions are pointed out for future investigations in this subject.
