Abstract

DUARTE, Camila Vianna. Views about retirement: a follow-up study. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.1, pp. 45-54. ISSN 1984-7270.

This exploratory and follow-up qualitative research aimed to investigate the views of a group of workers about retirement. The participants were 15 men and 15 women (n=30), aged 40 to 69, working in the private urban sector, who had just applied for retirement to the official Brazilian National Institute of Social Security (BNISS). The data were collected by means interviews, at two moments: first, when the subjects were on the verge of retirement and second, nearly 12 months after retirement. The results showed feelings of insecurity due to either financial destabilization or the impending loss of their social role. The subjects’ views about retirement, at the two moments of the study, are associated to some negative aspects of aging, such as: end of career and loss of functional abilities.

Keywords : Retirement; Professional identity; Old age.
