Abstract

AGUIAR, Fernando Henrique Rezende  and  CONCEICAO, Maria Inês Gandolfo. Expectations about the future and vocational choice of students moving to high school. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.2, pp. 105-115. ISSN 1984-7270.

The objective of this study was to understand the expectations and concerns of students from the last term of primary school, in relation to their joining high school as well as professional choice. Based on the the role of education and vocational guidance and the absence of rites of passage preparing for adulthood, this article examined, through qualitative content analysis, the answers to a questionnaire about the expectations concerning high school and professional choice of 227 students attending the last term of primary school, from a private school in Brazil. The findings showed that the participants had high expectations from high school: preparation for adulthood and university; a more plesurable learning process, widening of their social net, support and care. About professional choice, their concerns are similar to those of students attending the last high school term, and they think that the educational process barely prepares students for the future and, therefore, it is important to have vocational guidance since the early school years.
