Abstract

COIMBRA, Susana  and  FONTAINE, Anne Marie. Can I make it?: Self-efficacy differential study among 9th graders. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.1, pp. 5-22. ISSN 1984-7270.

At the end of the 9th grade, Portuguese students have to make their first important career decision. In this process, the subjective assessment of the skills that are required to meet the demands of this transition into high school seems to play an important role. The aim of our study was to analyse the effect of gender and socioeconomic status (SES) on occupational interests as well as four dimensions of self-efficacy: occupational, mathematical, academic and generalised. Hence, instruments were applied to 449 9th grade students. Both boys and girls are more self-efficacious towards occupations stereotypically associated to their own gender. It was also observed that the higher the students’ SES, the higher their level of academic and occupational self-efficacy.

Keywords : Self-efficacy; Professional interests; Occupational choice; Gender; Socioeconomic status.
