Abstract

SOUZA, Luciana Karine de  and  LASSANCE, Maria Célia Pacheco. Friendship in career counseling: three approaches with youngsters. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.2, pp. 279-287. ISSN 1984-7270.

From professional experience in career counseling with adolescents and young adults, we discuss three distinct approaches to friendship relations. First we present a brief overview of friendship conceptions and the main characteristics of friendship, especially during adolescence and young adulthood. This developmental phase is considered critical to the development of interpersonal competencies which will eventually be crucial to university life and the labor market. Secondly, we present three approaches to deal with the impact that friendship might have on adolescents that seek for career counseling. These three approaches - the understanding, the challenging, and the mediating approach - are discussed with basis on the CAP-SOP career counseling theoretical and methodological background at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Keywords : interpersonal relations; friendship; adolescents; career counseling.
