Abstract

Work and family is a concern faced by many families nowadays. Family responsibilities and job requirements are dimensions that generally conflict and cause problems within many families. This article focuses on the characterization of and implications underlying the family-friendly measures taken by five companies located in Portuguese territory, and the heads of their departments of Human Resources were interviewed. The main conclusion is that there is by the five interviewed employers a real concern to provide their workforce, with working conditions that would enable them to manage effectively work and family demands. To increase productivity and promote their employees' welfare are the main reasons for the companies taking those measures.
