Resumen

CARVALHO, Renato Gil Gomes. People versus things: On gender differences relating career interests. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp. 173-182. ISSN 1984-7270.

In this study we analyse the relationship between gender and career interests of 468 Portuguese adolescents at the end of 9th grade school. Through multivariate analysis of variance, we found a significant effect of gender on interests, with boys revealing, on average, more interest in working with things (in domains such as technology and outdoor jobs) and girls preferring chiefly working with people (communication, services, and arts). Although this pattern is similar to what the literature indicates, there were no differences verified in relation to sciences. Results are discussed considering the gender role in career decision making.

Palabras clave : Career Guidance; Vocational Interests; Gender; Gender Stereotypes.
