Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Clarissa Tochetto de  and  DIAS, Ana Cristina Garcia. Parents' perceptions of their participation in their undergraduate children's career development. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.1, pp. 61-72. ISSN 1984-7270.

This study aimed to investigate parents' perception of their participation in their children's career development. Nine parents of undergraduate students from the fifth grade of a Psychology course were interviewed. After content analysis, three categories were identified: conversation, emotional and material support, and influence by example. Parents not only talked to their children about the job market, but also supported them in their choices and insecurities, and offered financial support. In the parents' opinion, their attitudes towards career can influence their child's occupational choice. These results may improve the assistance to young people, and also benefit both children and parents in terms of professional counseling and career development.

Keywords : college students; parents; occupational choice; professional development.
