Abstract

MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira. Success and failure in students' integration to the university: a comparative study. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp. 215-226. ISSN 1984-7270.

This qualitative exploratory study compared experiences of success and failure of student's integration to higher education. In order to select participants, a sample of 334 students enrolled in the first semester of graduation from a private institution responded to measures of social and academic integration into the university. Were selected and interviewed 12 students, six had scores indicative of integration and six had scores indicative of non-integration into the university. The thematic-categorical content analysis of the reports revealed that attrition intentions are primarily a result of frustration of expectations about college life. The institutional credibility and perception of return on financial investment proved influential in students' connection to the institution. Individual differences played an important role in this process.

Keywords : college students; attrition; higher education.
