Abstract

MARTINS, Ana  and  COIMBRA, Joaquim Luís. Meanings given to work by Portuguese young adults in Higher Education: Crisis mode?. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp. 37-49. ISSN 1679-3390.

The goal of this research is to explore differences regarding meanings of work, amongst students, final year students and graduates (i.e., status) of Higher Education institutions in Portugal (N = 1421). Status, gender, age and professional situation differences were found. Using a short version of ESAT-R (Escala de Significados Atribuídos ao Trabalho - Sobral, 2008), findings suggest that students show higher levels regarding work's positive and negative dimensions; women display greater levels of appreciation of personal satisfaction and its positive dimensions; younger subjects present higher levels on the economic, negative and positive dimensions. Implications of this study are discussed.

Keywords : meaning of work; higher education; young adults; school to work transition.
