Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Clarissa Tochetto de; CARLOTTO, Rodrigo Carvalho; VASCONCELOS, Silvio José Lemos  and  DIAS, Ana Cristina Garcia. College adjustment and coping in brazilian college students: a review of literature. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp. 177-186. ISSN 1679-3390.

Starting university studies requires students adapt to the new context. It is possible that some coping strategies can assist this process. The aim of this study was to identify, based on a literature review, what is known about the possible relation between college adjustment and coping in Brazilian college students. In order to this, papers were searched on databases with the keywords college student(s), higher education, adaptation, environment, and coping. From 198 papers we identified, only 13 met inclusion criteria. These studies aimed to develop and to validate scales, to investigate academic experiences and to describe correlations between coping and variables of mental health. None of them studied the possible relation between coping behavior and college adjustment, indicating that this is a field to be further explored by future research.

Keywords : college students; college adjustment; coping behavior.
