Abstract

FIGUEIREDO, Vanessa Catherina Neumann  and  BARBOSA, Adriane Vargas. Career choice and professional expectations of students from a popular preparatory course. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.2, pp. 173-183. ISSN 1679-3390.

The aim of this research was to investigate the factors influencing career choice and the expectations about the future after completion of tertiary education of students from a popular preparatory course for the entrance exam into higher education in the city of Corumbá (MS), in 2012. This was an action research conducted during a career guidance program. Participants were 20 high school students from public schools, with family income up to three minimum salaries. Students perceived higher education as an investment that increases their chances of getting a job, but when faced with their material and educational conditions they ultimately choose less competitive courses, such as bachelor's degrees, in which they have more chance of approval.

Keywords : vocational guidance; higher education; minority groups; affirmative action.
