Abstract

ALMEIDA, Joana Gomes de. From unemployment to self-employment: Structure and agency of inequalities. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.2, pp. 231-241. ISSN 1679-3390.

Unemployment, being a social problem of undeniable gravity, encouraging entrepreneurship through self-employment, it has been shown as a promising route, albeit with complex effectiveness in the context of active policies. Necessity entrepreneurship, as it is labeled in the literature, appears commonly related to a low-profile cultural capital and the early abandonment of the autonomous projects. From the response to the classical sociological question of structure-agency relationship, we conclude that much of the social inequalities anchored to the trajectories of long-term unemployment are transformed into inequalities at different levels in the development of a valued productive activity, more specifically, in the creation of self-employment.

Keywords : entrepreneurship; unemployment; inequalities; agency; social structure.
