Abstract

VIANA, Viviane Ribeiro  and  MOURAO, Luciana. The perception of elementary school teachers concerning their professional development. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp. 55-65. ISSN 1679-3390.

The professional development of teachers has received more attention from researchers and society. This study aims to investigate the influence of motivation for the career choice, participation in professional training activities and job satisfaction, on the professional development of teachers of the initial years of elementary school. The participants were 266 teachers who responded to questionnaires composed of scales with highly-rated psychometric indicators. The results show that self-taught qualification actions and job satisfaction positively predict professional development. The study contributes to an expanded model of antecedents for the professional development of teachers, focusing on the early years of elementary school. Practical recommendations are presented for policy makers and for schools.

Keywords : professional development; career choice; professional qualification; job satisfaction; teaching work.
