Abstract

DAMASO, Juliana Gomes Bergo et al. It is too much pressure! Perceptions about mental strain among medical students. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.2, pp. 29-41. ISSN 1984-7270.

Given the prevalence of mental illness among medical students in Brazil, the meanings attributed to their endured sufferings during the university major were studied. An ongoing course implemented at a public university in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was chosen to organize focal groups with students. The analysis reveals manifestations and conditioning factors of mental illnesses such as feelings of guilt and insecurity, allied to social pressures for high school and professional performance. Strategies for coping with mental illness conditions are mentioned: leisure activities, friends and family support and the development of some emotional blockages. As this suffering tends to be considered ordinary, it is crucial to continue studying the issue as well as finding more answers to this matter in the medical educational field.
