Abstract

PAULOS, Liliana; VALADAS, Sandra T.  and  FRAGOSO, António. Internships as transitional spaces between Higher Education and employment. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, pp. 123-133. ISSN 1984-7270.  http://dx.doi.org/10.26707/1984-7270/2021v22n202.

This study is focused on the meanings given by non-traditional students to the internships as spaces of transition to employment. The data collection was based on 44 interviews to non-traditional students and graduates and to employers. From the perspective of students and graduates, the results suggest that internships play a crucial role in their insertion into the labour market. Internships further allow the application and validation of graduates' knowledge in a real work context. The employers we interviewed see the internships as an opportunity to meet potential workers. The results also suggest that students or graduates who participated in internships do not get automatic benefits out of it, at least regarding employment.

Keywords : perceptions of non-traditional students and graduates; employability; qualitative study; labour market.
