Abstract

ROCHA, Mônica de Oliveira  and  MESSIAS, João Carlos Caselli. I'm a leader and now? The experience of the first leadership. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, pp. 215-226. ISSN 1984-7270.  http://dx.doi.org/10.26707/1984-7270/2021v22n208.

Becoming a leader is a complex experience that implies adaptive challenges. This study aimed to understand deeply the psychological experience of becoming a leader. It used the phenomenological methodology and Comprehensive Narratives to apprehend the subjective experiences of seven recently promoted leaders. It was concluded that becoming a leader is an experience full of feelings, often antagonistic and overlapping, ranging from pride and self-realization, to anguish and anxiety. The transition is imbued with an intense emotional charge resulting from dilemmas, uncertainties and implies the search for a personal meaning to their experiences. As for practical implications, it provides inputs for the professional guidance of new leaders and for organizations to rethink their organizational career management strategies.

Keywords : professional development; professional aspirations; quality of work life; applied psychology; phenomenology.
