DIAS, Elsa Oliveira. Caring as cure and as ethics. Winnicott e-prints [online]. 2010, vol.5, n.2, pp. 21-39. ISSN 1679-432X.

This study begins by making explicit the care and responsibilities that are required of the therapist in the treatment of psychoses, when they are understood in the light of theWinnicottian theory of mental disorders. It then compares the ethics inherent to Freudian psychoanalysis - which is called here the ‘ethics of autonomy', and which is derived from the study and treatment of neuroses and made manifest in Freud's 1919 abstinence principle - with the ethics of care put forth by Winnicott. Regarding the latter, this study shows that dependency and reliability belong to the semantic field of caring, and that the prototype of reliability is the original goodness that characterizes the care that a sufficiently good mother devotes to her baby. The study then attempts to make explicit some aspects of this new ethics that lead to fundamental changes in the role of the analyst during therapy, which involve handling and the sense of cure.
