PEREIRA, Rafael Rodrigues. The importance of the implicit concept of self in the Ethics of Care. Winnicott e-prints [online]. 2011, vol.6, n.1, pp. 66-79. ISSN 1679-432X.

The aim of this work is to analyse the conception of self implied in the Ethics of Care. This ethical theory would presuppose a specific type of self-identity, that can be called a "relational self", by which the individual is understood from his relationships with others. Basing on two articles written by authors related to the Ethics of Care - Carol Gilligan e Nona Lyons -, we shall discuss two main points: a- the difference between the Ethics of Care and others ethical theories - specially the "ethics of justice" − can be understood from specific conceptions of self-identity, implied in those theories; b- the Ethics of Care can contribute in a relevant way to contemporary discussions about the relation between ethics and personal identity.

Palavras-chave : Ethics of Care; self-Identity; Ethics of Justice.
