In his conception of the emergence of ethics in the human experience, Freud remained basically a prisoner of the modern conception. Moving away from this conception, its dualisms and its social model based on the inevitability of conflict and repression, Winnicott is able to think the emergence of the ethical feeling in a totally different way. He does so based on the conception he developed of natural tendencies and the decisive role the environment plays in the actualization of these trends. His conception of the spontaneous superego, thought as an ethical feeling rather than as concepts that would allow to differentiate good from evil, does not lead him to disregard the importance of the social superego theorised by Freud. In his approach, nevertheless, his general conceptions allow him to cast a new look on this crucial stage of the emotional development process and the construction of the psychoanalytic theory.
