Abstract

SANTA CLARA, Carlos José da Silva. Melancholy and narcissism: the melancholy and its narcissistic face in the relations of self with the other. Mental [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.9, pp. 131-150. ISSN 1679-4427.

The present work is defined as an analysis of the melancholy in its narrow relation with the narcissism and the field of the alterity. We believe that the paradigm of the question of the object/other and its relation with the self circulates implicit in the Freud's text: "Mourning and melancholy", culminating in the definition of identification and "choice of the object founded in narcissism". The narcissism represents in the melancholy the closing to the meeting with the alterity of the other, since this means for the melancholic destruction of its ideal self. We aim at, therefore, a small reflection concerning the place of the other in the melancholy. Finishing, we look for to argue the dimension of the pain of the loss and the identification to the other as form to prevent a bigger suffering for the self.

Keywords : Melancholy; Ideal self; Narcissism; Investment; Alterity.
