Abstract

FONSECA, Poty Colaço; GENEROSO, Cláudia Maria; MAIA, Maria Silvana  and  EMMENDOERFER, Magnus Luiz. Therapeutic residence within the context of the Psychiatric Reform: family and social inter-relations. Mental [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.10, pp. x-xx. ISSN 1679-4427.

Within the context of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform in the 1980s, the aim of this report is to characterize the process of social reinsertion of mental illness based on its inter-relations with the family and the Therapeutic Residence structure. The results show that mental health in Brazil has surpassed the stage of intolerance to the differences, finding ways to promote social inclusion through a new psychosocial rehabilitation clinic. The Therapeutic Residence concept is part of a therapeutic net, which, instead of imprisoning the professional, and, mainly, the user, is built on the patient‘s daily capacity to overcome his/her own limitations and on family involvement through a Therapeutic Residence service structure.

Keywords : Mental health; Therapeutic residence; Social reinsertion; Autonomy.
