The aim of this work is to discuss the implications of breastfeeding considering the various factors that is make a multidimensional phenomenon, with significant effects on mother and child, particularly on their emotional development and mental health. Apart from the elements found in the literature, a clinical vignette was used, that, besides being illustrative, contributes to the discussion by highlighting aspects converging to a complex situation, capable of interfering in the frequency and duration of breastfeeding. The risk of reducing this phenomenon to some of its determiners is emphasized and a deep undertanding of this issue is fundamental to allow more effective interventive actions, also taking into account the individual.
