Abstract

This study aims to do a diagnosis of mental health care within the context of Primary Care in Florianópolis, SC. Thus, interviews were conducted with coordinators of local health units to collect data besides documental analyses. The results showed that a more specific approach has been recently adopted in mental health, even though the comments of those interviewed signal that the working teams’ actions are still focused on diagnosis production and rehabilitation rather than on health promotion and prevention of further damage resulting from the mental illnesses. This study attempted to contribute to a deep understanding of mental health care provided by Primary Care Units, by offering and opportunity to discuss this issue based on the local reality, and collaborating for the improvement of this service.
