Abstract

The purpose of this paper was mapping out the scientific production on poverty and understands the Social Representations (RS) about this theme. The bibliographic research reviewed 69 articles indexed in the Scientific Electronic Library - Scielo, published from January 1997 to July 2007 that contained one of the following keywords: poverty, poverty areas, low income, poor neighborhoods and slums. The database, composed by 69 articles, was submitted to: 1) survey of information like date, area of knowledge and institutional linkage of articles and periodicals. 2) analysis of the keywords of articles by EVOC program. The results indicate that the RS of poverty is organized around the central element of social policies. Moreover, it was found that the scientific production on poverty is increasing and focuses on the Rio-Sao Paulo route and that in the field of psychology is still incipient
