Abstract

MITRE, Aline Nogueira Minardi. Madness in different seasons: The family living with the mental disorder. Mental [online]. 2017, vol.11, n.20, pp. 4-28. ISSN 1679-4427.

This study is a cutout in the field of Psychology, which sought to understand, through a literature review, aspects that mark the history ofperson with mental disorder in Brazil and in the world, as well as discuss the effect of the inclusion of the person in the family relationship. The first step of inclusion, which is concluded with the Psychiatric Reform, was stopped to trait crazy people like an object and started to treat them as a subject. Today, the person with mental suffering is included in the family and has the support of community health network for treatment in times of crisis. The family has a hard time getting back home its members from psychiatric institutions, because it did not receive support or education of the State on how to deal with the conflict situations arising from mental illness; the family was not even informed of the process of Psychiatric Reform and substitutive models that would be deployed as an alternative to asylums. The workers of these services also have much trouble in this relationship, requiring constant training and information to provide care and comprehensive care to families and to the user in treatment. It is evident in this study that treatment to the mental suffering significantly improved over the centuries, but there is a lot to be worked out, particularly regarding integration and family participation in substitutive community services and support professionals to them.
