CANTARELLI, Aline Luisiane Camboim; LEVANDOWSKI, Daniela Centenaro  e  MARIN, Angela Helena. "I didn't change my name": what women say about not add their partner's surname in marriage or law marriage. Pensando fam. [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.1, pp. 03-16. ISSN 1679-494X.

In this study were investigated the reasons given by women for not adding the surname of the husband / partner in the marriagevcohabitation and the family and social repercussions. Seven women (27-44 years) living in the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul were interviewed. A qualitative content analysis of the interviews revealed as the main reason the preservation of personal identity, family, professional and cultural. This decision, although approved by the family of origin was not always discussed with her husband / partner and his family, leading to reactions of disapproval. Were referred also social situations in which the difference in surname caused doubt as to marital status of the participants. Although the possibility of changing the name is seen as a legal advance, which reflects changes in the social context of marital relations, it is a complex decision that should be approached with couples in preparation for marriage/cohabitation, due to their several implications.
