Abstract

Deafness interferes in people social, educational and emotional development. Thus, early diagnosis, made after Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS), become important to guarantee a better quality of life for those with hearing loss. This was a qualitative research, which objective was to investigate maternal perceptions and feelings faced to UNHS. The results, after content analysis, indicate the importance of health professionals to inform clearly and detailed about the exams that the babies will take, because lack of information may cause anxiety. Finally, it is understood that more studies are necessary in order to give a better understanding of this issue.
