Abstract

SILVA, Odacyr Roberth Moura da; SANTOS, Lucas Nápoli dos  and  DIAS, Carlos Alberto. Feelings of strangeness and the reconstitution of the family ties of the returned emigrant. Pensando fam. [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.2, pp. 57-72. ISSN 1679-494X.

The feeling of strangeness affects emigrants who have returned home and encountered difficulties in the symbolic reintegration within the family. This barrier which prevents the reconstruction of family relationships is experienced by many families living in the city of Governador Valadares (Minas Gerais - Brazil) and its surroundings. In order to understand such feeling present in the process of re-establishment of the returned emigrant's family relations, a cross-sectional and descriptive study in the form of case studies was performed. Seventeen families of returning emigrants, who remained abroad for a period from 3 to 15 years, participated in the study. We collected data through semi-structured interviews guided by Script Interview and used Bardin Content Analysis. Three categories were identified: (a) initial strangeness, (b) no strangeness e (c) constant strangeness. Although the majority of emigrants fantasize about finding the same family left, the reestablishment of family relations occurred, most often, with reformulated roles and functions.
