This study aimed to investigate the risk and protective factors in the use of Facebook among adolescents. A theoretical study was conducted from a narrative review of national and international scientific literature of peer-reviewed full articles, dissertations and theses, published between 2006 and 2016. The analysis of the articles, dissertations and theses focused on two categories defined a priori from the literature in order to respond to the proposed objectives: (a) Risk factors in the use of Facebook and (b) Protection factors in the use of Facebook. Results indicated the multiplicity of forms of Facebook use by adolescents, considered both as a risk and as protection. Facebook seems to facilitate risky developmental processes such as substance use, private exposure and violence practices. On the other hand, can be a facilitator in the learning process and cognitive and emotional development. Adults should supervise adolescents' use of the virtual network so that it ca be used in a way that minimizes risks.
