The family is socially recognized as a synonym for care and belonging. Front to inability to provide such care, is responsability of the State guarantee it through the application of protective measures, such as Institutional Care. This is an exceptional and temporary measure aimed at family reintegration front to changes in context. In this qualitative study were interviewed five families with Institutional Care history. It sought to understand the meanings attributed to them about this experience and the impacts of return generated in this system. Data were analyzed using content analysis proposed by Bardin. The results show that the experience of the Institutional Care was portrayed by families as positive and as a possibility of overcoming. The child's family reintegration was perceived by changes in the system, especially in relationships between the members and the son reintegrated. Thus, the return of the child at home was featured as a new opportunity for the family to play their roles.
