Abstract

ZERBINATI, João Paulo  and  BRUNS, Maria Alves de Toledo. The transsexual children’s family: what is the scientific literature has to say about it?. Pensando fam. [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.2, pp. 37-51. ISSN 1679-494X.

Transsexuality is a contemporary theme that instigates multidisciplinary dialogues in order to understand and promote care at the educational and health level to the population in transit of gender and sex. Transsexual people are characterized as a population at risk for the development of psychopathologies, not because of their gender identity status, but because of the influence of interpersonal and social factors such as stress, hostile environment and family neglect. The family deserves attention because it is considered an institution that can guarantee important protective functions for the physical and psychological development of the children who do not identify or poorly identify with the gender attributed to them at birth. This article aims to present, through an integrative review of the literature, the profile of international research on families with transsexual children. The family, while an institution of care and care, must protect and prepare the transsexual child to face the risks and preconceptions of a mostly binary society.
