Abstract

RESMINI, Gabriela de Faria  and  FRIZZO, Giana Bitencourt. Joint custody experience from the perspective of different family members. Pensando fam. [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.2, pp. 204-218. ISSN 1679-494X.

Joint custody is recent in Brazilian law and provides equal rights and duties between parental dyad and balance in decisions. Due to the need for adjustments in the family after separation, this study aimed to investigate the experience of different family members with joint custody. Individual interviews were conducted with five members from three different families. Data were analyzed qualitatively through the perspective of multiple cases, in narrative form, considering particularities and similarities. The results showed that most of the interviewees positively evaluated their experience with shared custody due to the flexibility in visits and to the possibility of greater father involvement. In one of the families, the existing conflict made it difficult to share custody. It was discussed that the use of messages and emails for combinations about the children could be a parent's strategy to maintain a "safe distance" and avoid conflicts.
